Carpenters are employers who are employed on construction sites to construct, restore, install and repair wooden structures and the related materials. These professionals are the largest group of trade workers in the building and construction site. Carpenters are exposed to large amount of dirty environment with extreme temperature conditions combined with high noise levels that comes from the restricted carpentry movements. They are given the responsibility to shape, saw and fasten wooden materials that is used for houses and other structural buildings. Carpenters are also involved in constructing shelves, cabinets, doors and other wooden objects. These professionals may use power and hand tools such as saws, hammers, chisels and drills to shape design and prepare wooden structures. They complete and fasten their wood work with the help of bolts, glue, nails and screws.
Carpenters may be employed on construction sites or they may be employed to repair materials at homes, colleges, universities, office buildings or other types of infrastructures. Most of the carpenters specialize in one area of the field because of the different types of construction. However, they specialize in one particular field with the help of general contractors who has knowledge about all the aspects of construction.
The work of a carpenter can be categorized into two – finish carpentry and rough carpentry. The job of finish carpenters is to cut and fit windows, interior molding and doors. They may also be involved with the building and installation of hardwood floors, cabinets and panel rooms. On the other hand, rough carpenters mostly work outdoors and their work involves the framework of building scaffoldings, completing unfinished wooden work and working with concrete. Majority of the carpenters are employed by builders and contractors and there is good employment advancement for all kinds of carpenters.
Some carpenters may also work with designing television and theatre studios while others are involved in building docks and wharves. A few of the carpenters may also work in factories that are given the responsibility of prefabricating and making parts for buildings. These professionals may also be specialized with the art of cabinet making. Cabinets makers specialize in design fine furniture by making use of hands in addition to wood.
Carpenters who have attained a level of experience in the industry may become supervisors of contractors. The employment for these professionals is expected to increase by the year 2014.
